Say Grace

Dad thanks God
for the meal Mom made
(but never her)
it was my lesson in love
that habit is greater
and hard men
find gratitude
a great challenge
(because it can't make
them more masculine)
they're OK to pray
to a wrathful father
who won't let them talk back
or demand what they deserve
but that doesn't translate
to human passion
where a lack of thanks
won't lead to eternal damnation
the only cost of coldness
is carnal closeness
but that's enough
what if we're judged
by the love we lost?
