Lose Your Witness
I was born
and raised on mythology
but I didn't know then
we just called it the truth
and in my youth, I heard every excuse
why Santa Claus and the foreign gods
were cheap competition
demonic imagination
I was taught to doubt
all deities but one
(give or take the father/spirit/son)
in our non-denomination
not one soul was religious
though they fit the dictionary definition
they read the book
said the prayers
attended service
— but called it a relationship
owing nothing to the past
back to the fundamentals
(the less said about the last
two thousand years, the better)
blind belief was the universal answer
don't doubt, don't debate, have faith
until your testimony scurries away
like a deer slips from a snare
if you lose your witness, don't worry
you can always leave
your friends and family
hey, don't laugh
we know you'll be back
because a lack of faith
is lonely
